Do guinea pigs make good pets?

You probably have seen your friends’ guinea pig photos on their social media accounts and thought how cute and adorable they look. You want to adopt a pet, but you don’t want to spend all the time walking a dog 2-4 times a day, or have to deal with a cat’s litter box. Should you adopt a guinea pig? Here are a few tips on helping you to decide.

Guinea Pigs Are Work

Whether you have a young child or a teenager, or a dog, cat, or guinea pig, you’re going to need to spend time looking after them, and time socializing with them too. They all need food, water, comfort, and play time. And they also get sick like us, so they may need extra care. They’ll also need pellets to manage their waste, just like a cat needs a litter box. But a pet can be rewarding too, even if they have special needs. You’re guaranteed to always have something to do when you’re at home, and you’ll always smile and have fun playing with a guinea pig. And no matter if you have human children, a dog or cat, or a spouse, they’re all going to be work too! If you can decide where to place your efforts, you’ll be a much happier person!

Comfort & Happiness

There have been many studies done that have proven that dogs and cats are actually good for our health. That is also applicable to smaller animals too. Guinea pigs will appreciate the care you give them, and they also enjoy being petted. The very act of a human petting a small furry animal helps to lower blood pressure, decrease stress, and generally be happy in that moment. This can have a big impact on our overall health, multiplied by the number of days in a year!

Guinea Pigs Are Family

As the percentage of people in the world who have pets increases, most can agree that all types of pets, even guinea pets, are members of the family. They aren’t disposable, and they have feelings too. They can get distressed if they’re abandoned at the local animal rescue shelter. If you want to help decrease the number of homeless pets at these shelters, you may consider adopting a guinea pig. Once they settle into their new home, they will be so happy and grateful! And these thoughts will make you smile too!
