Dating with cats?

Your cat(s) need to be part of your dating profile. The last thing you want is for a jerk to tell you to get rid of your cat. A man or woman who loves cats is also going to be a supportive and caring partner, especially if you want to extend your family after you move in together – with more cats of course!

But if you have found somebody to love, you want to introduce your cat to your love slowly and carefully.

Prep in Advance

You’ll need to make your preparations in advance. First, be sure to show photos of your cat to your new partner. This will make them excited to meet your furry family member. Then ask them to borrow one of their jackets. You’ll take it home with you, then lay it on the couch. This is so your cat can sniff it. They’ll become familiarized with your friend’s scent. And bonus points if they actually sleep on the jacket!

Invite Them Over

The next step involves inviting your new boyfriend or girlfriend to your home. Stick to a shorter visit, because you don’t know how your cat is going to react. If they’re distressed, it will only be for a short time. If they’re happy to meet, then your cat will look forward to the next visit. Once your partner is in your home, keep the environment quiet. Simply sit in the living room and see if the cat comes up to them. If so, they should allow the cat to sniff their hand before touching. If the cat rubs against their hand, that is the cue for further petting. If the cat jumps up beside them, or onto their lap, that is wonderful news!

Provide a Toy

If the two appear to be getting on, have your partner play with them for a while. A ribbon or wand toy is perfect for some interaction. Later, your partner can give your cat some treats. As the relationship progresses, your partner can feed your cat in the kitchen.

Ultimately, your cat will let you know if they like your new loving choice. If not, there may be something off about that person. Or, maybe your cat hates everyone but you. If so, it’s going to take time. But if your cat loves your new partner, then that’s great news!
