Five things every pet owner needs to know about CBD and pets

As a concerned pet parent, it is important to be up to date on pet health trends.  As with any new wellness trend, when it comes to CBD oil for pets, there's a lot of information floating around online, some of it is not true or based on facts.

Check out these five facts every pet parents needs to know about CBD and pets.

1.      CBD, like marijuana, is derived from hemp plants, but CBD has very low amounts of THC compared to marijuana.   

2.      Hemp derived CBD is legal in most states, but only if:

·       It contains less than 0.3% THC

·       Adheres to the shared state-federal regulations

·       Is grown by a properly licensed grower

 

3.      FDA has approved one cannabis-derived and three cannabis-related drug products for human use. 

4.       There are no FDA approved CBD products for veterinary use.  CBD is classified as a nutraceutical supplement. Nutraceuticals cannot make health claims like an FDA approved product can. 

5.      There are some scientific studies that have shown promise for CBD use in pets – including one on CBD for pain control in dogs with osteoarthritis and more research is being done.
