Dog training made easy

Unlike cats that generally learn how to use a litter box from their mothers, dogs need training before they can live happily in a home with their new owners. The last thing you want is your dog to use your rug as a litter box, or to tear up the couch. Whether your dog just had pups, or you are planning on adopting a dog, they will need to be trained in order to live a happy life with you.

Focus On Positive Reinforcement

If your dog does something they shouldn’t, it’s best to ignore the behavior, as they can react negatively to punishment, which can also affect your bond together. But if they do something good, then you can reward them with praise, and a healthy treat. It may take time. Your dog may not understand on the first attempt, and it could be a few weeks before they can fully follow your instructions.

What Types of Training Does a Dog Require?

First, you’ll need to train your dog to notify you when they need a potty break outside. You’ll also need to train them to not jump on people, particularly strangers who aren’t expecting it. Dogs should also know to not incessantly bark, particularly when you’re not at home. They should be quiet when people sleep. These may all seem like work, but you can also add in some dog training to teach them tricks, which will make the whole process seem a lot more fun.

How to Begin the Training

Most types of training can begin with the same process. Sit near your dog when you have their attention. Remove all other items to avoid distraction (toys, pets, children, etc.) Use their name, then your chosen command. (Sit, stay, come, up, etc.) Each time you say their name with the command, give them a treat. Don’t expect them to do anything just yet. Do it a few times, then hold the treat in your fingers and say the command. If you want them to come, move a bit away from them. Say their name and “come” if you’re working on that command. Eventually, they’re going to figure out that you want them to come on that command! This can be a fun and simple process. And when they figure it out, give them treat, and lots of praise and pets.

Practice Training Every Day

Some types of training are going to be simple, such as the come command, stay, or sit. Begin the next day’s training with simple commands that your dog has already learned. Add in a new one that might be more difficult. Remember that if your dog doesn’t figure it out, he/she still has the next day and the ones after that. There may also be days when your dog simply doesn’t want to do the training. Perhaps they’re tired, like we get sometimes.

With a bit of patience, dog training can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your pet!
