Tips for camping safely with your pet
Camping is a wonderful way to spend summer months, and has a lot of benefits for everyone. Just like the rest of your human family, your dog would probably love to go on a camping trip. Before your four legged friend can come with you however, he’s going to need a bit of preparation in order to help keep him safe.
Check with the campground first
Most campgrounds are pet friendly, but some may have specific rules or regulations. These include things like leash laws, a ban on extendable leashes, barking rules, and more. It’s important to get this information so you know whether your pet is welcome, and also so you’re not caught without a leash when the type you have isn’t accepted.
Play it safe
Make sure your dog is up to date on his vaccines, has identification tags on him, and ideally also microchipped. It’s also helpful to bring a current photo of him so in the event he gets loose, people will know what he looks like.
Flea and tick medication is also strongly encouraged, so you won’t bring home any uninvited guests after your stay.
Locate a vet near the campgrounds
Accidents happen. It’s a good idea to look up where the closest emergency vet is, just in case your pet is injured. If there’s an emergency, you’ll know exactly where to take your pet to get him the help he needs. A first aid kit is also a great idea to take along, just in case he needs immediate first aid or has a smaller injury that needs tending.
Never leave your dog unattended
If possible, never leave your dog unattended during a camping trip. Even if your dog is very friendly, he could end up stolen, attacked by a less friendly dog at the campsite, or even by predators in the area. He may also chew free of a tie-out, and slip away before anyone knows he’s gone.
Even if your dog is generally well mannered or easy going, it’s better to stay safe and keep an eye on him at all times.
Bring some toys
Although camping may be constantly stimulating to you, your dog may eventually find it boring. You can help keep him entertained by bringing his favorite toys with him. This is especially handy if you need him to stay by your side quietly for a while, such as while telling stories around the campfire or loading the truck up to go home.
With a stuffed kong, you can bet he’ll be happy to chew nearby while you focus on a different task.
Dogs make great camping companions. If you’re thinking about bringing your four footed friend on your next adventure, make it a great one with a little planning ahead. Your dog will likely love exploring the woods with you, going hiking, or even a lazy day fishing by the side of the lake as much as you do.
As long as you’re safe and practical about it, your pet will have as much fun as you do.
