Tick season 101: 5 ways to avoid tick bites & Lyme disease this summer

Warmer weather is coming and you know what that means… tick season is upon us! Tick seasons is the season every pet parent dreads – there’s nothing worse than having to constantly worry about your pet getting bite by a tick. Sometimes we don’t notice ticks for a couple of days, then you’ll be stressed about having to look for signs of Lyme disease… it’s a whole thing. To make our lives easier as pet parents, there are some things we can do for our parents to lessen their chances of getting bit by ticks.

5 ways to prevent ticks from latching on to your pet:

1.      Tick collars

A tick collar is a good choice when it comes to preventing tick bites and Lyme disease in your pets. Collarsare an easy-to-use, odorless collar that kills and repels fleas and ticks for several months. You put the collar on your pet (make sure it touches their skin) and that’s it! It’s super easy and the collar lasts so you don’t have to constantly stress about if it’s working or not.

2.      Keep any trees or wildlife maintained

If your backyard has a lot of trees, grass, and types of wildlife surrounding it, make sure to trim and maintain it. Ticks live in nature and they are more likely to jump on your animal if you let the nature around your house go wild all summer. Keep your lawn short, your trees trimmed, and wildlife greenery at a minimum.

3.      Tick sprays & shampoos

This is a similar option to the tick collar, just in a spray form. If you don’t like the idea of a tick collar (maybe you have kids that grab at your pet’s collar often) but want something similar, there are so many great options on the market.

4.      Brush them everyday

No matter what length of hair your pet has, you should brush them every day to ensure they don’t have any ticks latched onto them. While it’s harder for ticks to grab onto your pet if they have long hair, it can still happen and they can be harder to find the longer the hair is. By brushing them every day you can pull out any live or dead ticks that may be on your pet, or you can tell if one is attached.

5.      Check them daily

If you and your pet love to adventure on nature trails or hikes, make sure to do a thorough check on your pet and yourself after your adventure. Before your adventure, you should spray both you and your pet with tick and bug repellent to ensure nothing can grab onto either of you. You should be checking your pet daily for ticks, click here to see what areas you should be checking every day for ticks.

Be safe this summer!

Tick season is right around the corner, which means you need to get ready for it. The things listed above are to help avoid any tick bites or Lyme disease in your pet. Lyme disease from tick bites can be very serious, and a long-lasting illness that never goes away. Be smart and safe this summer by protecting you and your pet from tick bites!
