How to train your puppy

If you have a puppy, it is necessary that you train them to act a certain way at an early age. When they are young, they will learn what is and isn’t acceptable in the home.

Keep in mind that a puppy will still be teething plus they will be very playful. These two qualities mixed can lead to them chewing on your items and destroying things around the house. So, what can you do about it and how can you train your puppy not to destroy the house?

Establish What is Theirs

As a puppy, they will require lots of toys and things of their own to chew on. It is helpful to establish and teach them what is theirs.

Take the time to show them their toy and play with them so that they know this item is ok to chew on. If you catch your puppy chewing on your shoe or something they shouldn’t be, calmly take it away from them and replace it with their own toy.

This will help show them what is ok to chew on and what isn’t.

Set Boundaries

Keeping your puppy in a restricted area will alleviate that initial act of chewing on your things. They won’t be able to chew on your couch if there isn’t a couch nearby to chew on.

This doesn’t mean the area should be completely empty, just let them have toys and their own bed. As your puppy gets used to this they won’t be as tempted to chew on your things once you let them out of the set area.

Find Out if It’s Separation Anxiety

All puppies will chew things up and make a mess. But sometimes, it could be more than that. Your puppy is still in the phase of needing to be mothered and when they are alone, they may feel more anxious.

Your puppy will then go into a destructive phase to help them forget the stress. If this is the case giving your puppy a Brave Paws Anxiety and Stress support chewable to help with anxiety and easing them into periods of being alone will set you and your puppy up for success.

Final Thoughts

When you get a puppy, it is inevitable that it will need training. They are young and learning all about life and how to live it.

Being patient, loving, and positive will greatly help you on that journey!
