How to keep your old dog feeling young

Our senior pets mean as much to us as they did when they were puppies, and often times more. After all, our seniors have stuck with us for years, and have years of those wonderful memories with them. Unfortunately, as dogs grow older they tend to slow down. If you’re worried about your older dog and want to see them feeling good again, here are a few tips to help.

Start with your veterinarian

It seems like every advice column sends you back to the vets, but this is for good reason. If your dog is feeling sore from arthritis, poorly due to lose teeth, or has a heart problem making him cough, the vet is the person to help ease symptoms. Even if your pet doesn’t appear ill yet, regular checkups with the vet can spot big problems early, when they are still easily treated.

Keep their weight in check

Just like people, dogs tend to pack on the pounds as they get older. Yet weight problems can add to health problems associated with old age. The more weight arthritic joints have to carry, the more they will hurt. Keeping your dog active can help extend their lives, and make them feel younger too.

Ask your vet about your pet’s weight while he is getting checked out, and work with them to figure out a healthy diet for your dog.

Provide mental stimulation

Just like with humans, keeping an older mind busy can help keep it sharp. The saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is not only inaccurate, but also unhealthy. Training your pet, offering them thinking toys, and just spending time playing with them can all help make him feel young and stay healthy too.

As your dog gets older he may need a bit more support to feel young again, but it can happen. Keep him healthy and spend time with them so they are ready to romp for years to come.
