How to keep your dog safe while boating with dogs
Most dog’s love the open sea, standing at the very prow of the boat and taking in all the new and wondrous scents the ocean has to offer. Even a simple fishing trip out on the lake can be fun for your dog, giving him new sights and sounds to enjoy.
While there are lots of benefits to taking your furry-friend on the water, it should also be done safely. Before you take your dog out on the water, it’s best to make sure you have all your bases covered so it’s an enjoyable trip for you both.
Carry your dog on the boat
Even if you have a loading ramp that will let your dog walk up onto the boat, it’s better to carry them for safety. If your dog gets nervous or tries to jump, he can end up falling over the edge of the ramp or between the pilings and the boat.
Even if your dog is uninjured, it could lead him to be shy of boats in general, which will be a problem if you want to boat with your dog.
Make your dog wear a life vest
Whether your dog is a tiny breed or a giant, there is a life jacket especially made for his size. It’s important that he be wearing one at all times while he is on the boat, just like it is important that all humans wear them as well.
The best kind of life jacket for your dog features reflective strips so it’s easier to see your dog to pull him out of the water, and a handle on top to make lifting him out easier.
Secure fish bait, and teach your dog to leave it alone
If you’re going fishing with your dog, teach him the bait is off limits. You can do this by rewarding him with delicious treats when he’s ignoring the buckets, and keeping baited hooks and bait buckets away from the dog when they are not in use.
If your dog decides to snack on some delicious fish—unaware that there was a hook attached to it—you may find your day spent at the emergency animal hospital rather than the water. You can never be too safe with bait.
Have a plan for if your dog falls in
Most boaters have a detailed plan for what to do if a person falls into the water. The same plan should be for your dog. This list should be detailed, including everything from shutting down the engine to lifting the dog out.
Even if steps seem obvious, add them in so you don’ forget one in a panic situation.
Boating can be a very enjoyable experience for both people and dogs, but it needs to be done safely. By following a few common sense rules, your pet can enjoy the trip right along with you, while also being kept safe and sound during your trip.
