How to keep your cat happy in a small apartment

Unlike most dogs, cats can happily live indoors all their lives with no access to the outside world. They make fantastic apartment pets, but they do need some enrichment in order to thrive. When an apartment is very small, it means they’re not as able to get that enrichment from roaming the house.

If you have a small apartment, here are a few things you can do to help your cat enjoy his tiny kingdom.

Give him a view

Cat’s love to look down at their kingdom and see the activity going on. If you have a window they can look out of, giving them access to it can add hours of entertainment to their day. Even if they have no ability to get down and saunter among the busy people walking by, or to chase the bird tweeting at them from a tree, they’ll still love that view.

Don’t forget the view of the inside of the house too. A high perch such as a cat tree will allow your cat to climb up to the top and enjoy the view of his own little domain—giving him multiple points to enjoy people watching from.

Rotate toys

Cats often get bored of toys quickly, just as kids and other animals do. You can help by putting up his old toys for a few weeks and bringing out new ones. After the new ones have lost their charm, you can rotate them for the ones that have been on vacation.

By allowing the cat time to forget about what was in the box, you can make old toys new again indefinitely.

Hide the food

Making his food a bit harder to access can also help break up time. Instead of feeding him in a bowl, try feeding some of his food in an old shoe box with a paw sized hole cut out. He’ll have fun sweeping around in it to find the goodies, and pulling out an awesome snack.

Cats do very well in small environments. You can help them enjoy their life even more with these quick tips.
