Getting to safe base with your kitty

Hi everybody! Molly DeVoss with Cat Behavior Solutions here, with your Vitakraft Bonding Tip of the Month. They make amazing treats and they’re expanding their line daily, which is very exciting because I use them in the shelter.

To Cuddle or Not to Cuddle

I think when we think about bonding with another being, we think it’s all about getting closer: more time cuddling, more time with your cat on your lap, things like that. But for cats, if it feels safe in a space with you, it’s going to want to bond with you more.

Creating a Safe Base

One of the best ways to make a cat feel safe is to provide a safe base. For example, that could be a really tall cat tree. And make a rule in the house that anytime the cat gets on the cat tree, it’s a no-touch zone – nobody in the house touches the cat while it’s on its tree. That’s safe base.

In my house we created our safe base way up high, so we’re not even tempted to touch him. We created a stairway on the wall that connects to a scratching post. And when he doesn’t want to be messed with, he goes up there in his bed above the room where no one can reach him and takes a nap or takes a toy up to play around – but most importantly, that’s his space. That’s the place where he can have a little time to himself when he doesn’t really want to interact with anybody.

Sometimes not interacting with your cat every morning, every minute is the best way to bond with them. So happy bonding this month, and until next time, keep calm and purr on!
