Do ducks make good pets?

As winter eases its grip on the world and spring flowers start to appear, so do many cute animals in farm supply stores and other places. Baby chicks, bunnies, and ducklings all make their appearance in stores, and are extremely cute when still small and fuzzy.

Although they are cute and fuzzy now however, ducklings have a habit of growing up into full fledged ducks, who can live up to 10 years.

Surprisingly good outdoor pets

When properly cared for, ducks can actually make wonderful pets. They are social, enjoy hanging out with a person they are bonded to, and can easily be trained to do tricks. Some ducks are even tame enough to go with you on visits to the pet store, or other pet-appropriate locations.

While not the most snuggly pet, if you want an outdoor animal as a pet, ducks make a great choice.

Always 2

Although your duck will love who ever they bond to, they will be miserable without another duck to live with. That means if you plan to get a pet duck you should plan to get two ducks, not just one. Pairs can be kept as two males or two females to avoid breeding, but your ducks will be happiest if they have a mate.

If sexing is important to you, it’s important to choose an older duckling or duck rather than the day old pets often seen at the store. Older ducks are much easier to sex, and you’ll be more likely to get the gender of your choice.

Keep safe from predators

One unfortunate problem with duck keeping is that they are very low on the food chain, which means lots of different animals prey on them. It’s important to keep them in a predator proof enclosure when you’re not around, so that you don’t come home to a tragedy.

If you want a pet that’s easy to care for but still friendly and out going, a duck may be a great choice for you and your backyard.
