3 quick tips to reduce shedding
We love our dogs, but especially in the spring and fall months shedding can make us lose our minds. Everywhere you look there is a tumble weed of hair blowing across the floor, and you may have swept just minutes ago.
Certain breeds shed more than others, but the good news is there are plenty of things you can do to curb this problem. Here’s a few quick and easy ways to reduce shedding.
Feed good quality food
Long term, good quality food can cut down on the overall amount of shedding your dog produces. While this won’t help you for the current shedding season, it will help reduce the overall amount as time goes on. This won’t eliminate shedding, but it can be a big help especially if the shedding is partially related to skin problems.
Let your dog soak in conditioner
When washing your pet, use a generous amount of conditioner and let it sit on your dog’s skin for at least a minute before rinsing off. The longer the conditioner sits on your pet’s skin, the longer it has to work. Conditioner can help loosen up the hair that would be coming out later, so you can get it all at once instead of brushing it out bit by bit through the month.
Brush regularly
Make brushing a daily part of your dog’s life. If your dog doesn’t enjoy brushing, you can make the process more enjoyable by accompanying it with treats, or using a grooming mit or other product that doesn’t look like an actual brush.
A rubber curry comb works great for getting hair off of short coats, and longer coats can benefit from slicker brushes. Although furminators get a lot of hair, be cautious with them. They can damage the coat.
These quick tips can help cut a lot of shedding down, and reduce the number of hair tumbleweeds you see around your house.
