Pythiosis in a cat

Pythiosis is a fungal infection found mostly in dogs and horses in tropical and subtropical regions. An 8 week old kitten was presented to a veterinary clinic with an extensive circular ulcerated lesion on the left flank. When the lesion was found to be non-responsive antibiotics therapy, clinical specimens were submitted for culture. The culture confirmed fungal-like flat colonies later identified as Pythium insidiosum, and the findings were confirmed by histopathology, serology, and DNA sequencing. The cat was then treated with itraconazole without resolution and then later treated with Pythium-immunotherapy was initiated. The lesion had contracted around the edges and was crusting off to reveal healthy granulation tissue with in 10 days. Twenty-three days after immunotherapy was initiated the original wound had shrunken significantly to a small scabbed area.

However, the cat was euthanized due to lung and intestinal complications. A necropsy was not performed.
