16 Million Tails Wagging: How Hill’s Is Making Pet Adoption Easier Than Ever
If you have ever adopted a pet or thought about it, this is one milestone worth celebrating. Hill’s Pet Nutrition has officially helped support 16 million pet adoptions through its Food, Shelter & Love program. That is 16 million dogs and cats who made the journey from shelter life to couch cuddles since the program launched in 2002. For pet owners, this milestone is about more than a big number. It is about healthier pets, easier transitions into new homes and support for the shelters that work tirelessly to care for animals in need.
What Is the Food, Shelter & Love Program
Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love program provides science-led pet food to more than 1,000 animal shelters across North America every single day. Since its start, Hill’s has donated more than $300 million worth of food, helping shelters keep pets well-fed, healthy and ready for adoption. Good nutrition matters, especially in shelters where pets may arrive stressed or underweight. Consistent, high-quality food helps support digestion, immune health and energy levels. When pets feel better, they show better, which can make all the difference in helping them find a forever home.
To celebrate reaching 16 million adoptions, Hill’s is teaming up with shelters across the United States and Canada for the Sweet 16 Million Adoptions Celebration from December 8 through 14. During this event, Hill’s is contributing up to $200,000 to help cover dog and cat adoption fees at select partner shelters. Many adopters will also receive a New Pet Parent Kit that includes a starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet, a coupon and helpful tips for life after adoption. For new pet parents, this takes some pressure off during those first busy days and helps pets stay on the same food they were eating in the shelter.
Anyone who has brought home a shelter pet knows the first few weeks can be a mix of excitement and adjustment. Keeping a pet on the same diet helps reduce tummy troubles and stress during that transition. It also gives new owners time to settle into a routine before making any changes with guidance from their veterinarian. Lower adoption fees during the celebration also make it easier for families to say yes to adopting. That means more pets finding homes and more families experiencing the joy that comes with welcoming a new companion.
Hill’s impact does not stop once a pet leaves the shelter. The Food, Shelter & Love program also supports community pet food pantries, donating more than 1.5 million pounds of food over the past four years. These pantries help families keep their pets during tough financial times. Hill’s Disaster Relief Network has provided more than 4.4 million pounds of food during emergencies, helping shelters and pet owners affected by fires, floods and other crises. The company also shares research and insights on pet adoption trends to help shelters and communities improve outcomes for animals.
Sixteen million adoptions is a reminder of what can happen when companies, shelters and pet lovers work together. For pet owners, it is a chance to celebrate the power of adoption and the importance of starting pets off with proper nutrition and care. If you are thinking about adopting, now is a great time to check your local shelter’s website or social media to see if they are participating in the Sweet 16 Million Adoptions Celebration. Your next best friend might be waiting.
