How to stay in shape without a gym membership

Whereas things are slowly opening back up again, a lot of us aren’t ready to take that leap and hit the gym again, and that’s okay! There are plenty of ways for you to stay in shape, or get into shape, that do not require you to be in a gym.

Outdoor Workout Classes

For anyone who is willing to take fitness classes as long as they are spaced properly, outdoor (or properly spaced indoor) classes are a great option! There are plenty of options ranging from outdoor yoga to stationary biking that will get your heart pumping without risking your health! Equipment is always heavily sanitized, masks are always required, and most classes are perfectly spaced! You can always call ahead to get details if you are unsure!

Go for Hikes

A phenomenal option for staying in shape or getting into shape in general is going on hikes either by yourself, with friends, or with your pets! Hiking is a full body workout that burns those calories without requiring you to run on a treadmill for an hour. The views are better, the air is fresh, and more often than not, you can remove your mask since you are less likely to be around other people!

Purchase Workout DVD’s

DVD’s? Do any of us even own a DVD player anymore? Maybe not, but for those of you that do, workout DVDs are a great option for working out in the comfort of your own home. There are dozens of fitness programs out there that are for 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, etc. and they all have their own targets! These programs are always taught by personal trainers and fitness instructors so you’re getting a quality program for a fraction of the price of a personal trainer!

Browse YouTube

YouTube is a prime source for workout content. Whether you’re looking for an ongoing program or a quick workout one evening while your dinner is cooking, I guarantee you’ll find something to your liking on the internet! The best part is all you need is an internet connection, most of the time you don’t even need to purchase any equipment! Pilates is a phenomenal option for anyone who wants to get their daily workout in, but without any equipment!

Create a Small, At-Home Gym

If you are wanting a more gym-like atmosphere, creating an at-home gym might be the best option for you. You can purchase free weights in retail stores, from places like Amazon, or buy them used on Facebook Marketplace or at garage sales! You do not need to invest hundreds of dollars to create your own personal gym. You just need a few staple pieces like free weights, yoga mats, maybe a bench if it’s in budget and you’re good to go!

Pick Up a Cardio Activity

For anyone who wants to get out of the house but still avoid crowds, try challenging yourself to take up running, biking, speed-walking, or even inline or roller skating. You don’t need to go sign up for a 5k, but cardio is a key element in any fitness journey. These options provide you the freedom to get out and about without risking your health. Just pop in your favorite tunes and hit the sidewalks!

No matter how you choose to start your journey, the important part is that you start small and stick to it! You should be patient with yourself and remember that what works for someone else, may not work for you and that’s okay! It’s your journey, enjoy it!
