How to find your perfect match

Dogs are family so you should adopt, not shop. A dog is your fur child for a lifetime and you shouldn’t choose a dog based on a photograph alone. You really need to meet the dog in person. Here are a few tips on how to pick out a dog so you don’t have to do that dreaded “surrender” and have your pet-loving friends and family be mad at you.

Book An Appointment

Many animal rescue centers and the SPCA still require an appointment for visitors to attend in person and meet the dogs. Check their website to see if you can book an appointment online, or do a telephone call to book an appointment over the telephone.

Meet Several Dogs

You’ll need to meet several dogs in person so you can choose the one who is right for you. Just how do you tell? Do any of the dogs run up to greet you? They might be the perfect dog, rather than one who hides away. Does the dog stay with you after you’ve been introduced? Do they look sad when you walk away? These can be cues that they’re perfect for you. Spend some time with each dog. Do they enjoy playing? How does the dog react to the other family members you brought with you? Find out if they respond to common commands. Make sure you ask about any health issues, most of which are manageable.

You’ll Know When the Time is Right

If you’re uncertain, it’s best to not rush into a dog adoption. You may leave and think about it overnight. In fact, the animal rescue center will be happy you do this, as they don’t want to adopt to the first person who has visited a dog for only five minutes. Later on, you may have a feeling that the dog is right for you. How? Because you may miss that dog when you’re back at home. You want to go and adopt them right away, and give them a good home.

Dogs make wonderful companions, but just like human children, they’re going to require extra care. It’s important you choose the right companion for you, rather than choosing a dog on a photograph. (Tip: Go to the store and buy a dog stuffie then!) Soon you’ll be living with your wonderful new companion, and be happy that you took your time in choosing your new friend!
