3 of the most famous dog actors in history

If you are a big fan of the silver screen, you’re probably familiar with some of the big names in Hollywood. What you may not know is that alongside Christopher Reeves and Marilyn Monroe, there are dog actors who were every bit as famous. Here are 3 of the most beloved dog actors of all time.

Terry, the Cairn Terrier

This scrappy little dog was made famous in the Wizard of Oz, playing Toto. Terry had a rough start in life and was abandoned as a puppy. Luckily, she got a second chance when German immigrant Carl Spitz picked her up. He happened to be an unofficial animal trainer for Hollywood, and the rest is history.

Terry lived to be 11 years old and starred in 17 films, making her one of the most famous dogs in Hollywood history.

Rin-Tin-Tin the German Shepherd

Rin-Tin-Tin, or Rinty, was the only survivor of his litter. He was found in France during World War I, and adopted by an American called Lee Duncan. Back at home, Lee took Rinty to a dog show where he caught the eye of a film maker when he jumped a wall 12 feet tall.

The dog saved struggling film studio Warner Bros through his popularity in silent film, and he was featured in 27 different films, many written specifically for him. Although many dogs tried to follow in his paw prints, none were as talented as he was on the big screen.

Pal the Rough Coat Collie

Of course, no list is complete without the dog from the famous Lassie series. Pal was the first in a long line of collies to perform for the famous Lassie series, and since then all movies about Lassie has used a male dog from his bloodlines.

Pal was originally passed up as a show prospect due to his white blaze and large eyes, but they didn’t stop him from becoming a dog more famous than any other collie in the world.

These 3 dogs are some of the most famous in Hollywood history, and they prove that any dog can make it on the big screen no matter what their history. If you’ve ever wondered if your shelter pet or show dog reject could be an animal actor, you might want to just start training—they could be the next Lassie.
