Surrey bikes: A unique way to exercise with family

Getting the whole family out for exercise can be a challenge. Small children might not be able to keep up for hikes or other strenuous activities, and activities geared toward them aren't very active for older people.

Allowing everyone the chance to be together and be active is difficult, but there is a fun solution available at many locations around cities, shorelines, and parks the world over, called a surrey.

A surrey is a two to six person bicycle built like a kind of horse carriage called a surrey. These bicycles have enough room for kids and even babies on board, and allow everyone to share in the work of peddling. Babies and children too young to sit on a seat of their own can go in the basket at the front, which has seat belts. Children too young to peddle can go on the middle seats.

All the people peddling don't have to be equally strong in order to drive the surrey along easily. That means an older relative can join in the exercise without making it noticeably harder on the rest of the riders.

Surreys are rentable in most locations where bicycles and other types of transportation are for rent, but if there are none in your area you can also purchase your own. These are best used on black top surfaces large enough for this type of vehicle, such as cul de sacs, bicycle paths, and other relatively low traffic areas.

Finding ways for everyone to get out in the sunshine and exercise together can be difficult. With families having a range of abilities, it can be hard to find an activity everyone can join in. Surrey bikes are a great way to bring everyone together, stay active, and build memories that will last a life time.
