Miranda Wang: How she helped save our planet
Who is Miranda Wang?
Miranda Wang is the co-founder and CEO of a company called Novoloop. This is an organization that uses chemical technology to turn unrecyclable plastics into new materials. Her companies’ mission is to keep our planet safe and clean.
“Plastics are just natural compounds and natural carbons tied together in an unnatural way, and once you disrupt that, you can use those natural building blocks to make anything. We can make a product from plastic garbage that’s not only useful in new products, but it is also biodegradable and is able to break down.”, says Wang.
Back in 2018 and at only 24 years old, Miranda received the UN Environment Programme’s Young Champions of the Earth Award. Her innovation and need to help our planet survive were noticed worldwide, and she was rewarded appropriately for all the hard work she put in.
What does she do?
When Miranda was still in school, she went on a school field trip to a waste management facility and was disgusted by how much plastic she saw that was going to end up in a landfill. The trip stuck with her for 10 years, until she was able to do something to help. That’s when Novoloop was created.
Novoloop was their breakthrough solution to plastic waste, using chemical technology to break down non-recyclable products and turn them into something new and useful. When asked if Wang could describe the types of products she created so far, her response was “We can take dirty plastic bags and upcycle them into something of much higher value like running shoes. Our flagship product XIRC is a line of sustainable and customizable, high-performance, polyester-based, TPU elastomers that use up to 50% post-consumer polyethylene.”

Why did she start this movement?
The school field trip Wang took to the waste management facility was the main driver in her journey to making the world more sustainable. When she saw that facility, a fire fueled in her that wouldn’t stop until she made a difference. And made a difference is exactly what she did. Wang inspires everyone to do better and be better for our planet. We only get one planet, and like anything we have, we need to do better as humans to makes sure it’ll survive for years to come.
